Best
I Ever Had
You walk down the block and you hear some brothers
blasting some B.I.G, Tupac, Coolio, or some old Jay-Z, and your expression is
like, “What the, where this guy come from? This s**t sucks.” Then you look at
the guys playing the music and there old guys, guys with time. They listen to
that music for the same reason you listen to yours, the music talks to them,
reflects them, not on point, but to some degree. The music you listen to reflects
who you are. Music can be interpreted many ways, it all depends on the
listener.
My favorite artist of all time is Drake. I just had to
download his albums after I heard “Headlines.” That s**t was straight up real.
”You
know that they ain't even got it like that
You
gonna hype me up and make me catch a body like that
Cause
I live for this, it isn't just a hobby like that
When
they get my shit and play it, I ain't even gotta say it, they know”
No, I don’t have the
overwhelming millions stacked in their own luxury house like Drake, but I interpreted
the lyrics differently. The song, these lines particularly, said to me, to
enjoy life and do my work to the best I can, because it’s all I have to do.
“I
might be too strung out on compliments, overdosed on confidence”
To take all of the compliments,
and use it to build confidence over what I’m doing. I do very well in
everything. Academically, on the court, and even physically. I just take all of
the comments, negative or positive, and all the compliments and use them as
fuel to continue what I do, it’s all I have to do anyways. I do this too. I
listen to his music because his lyrics reflect who I am as a person. Because
the lyrics in a song reflect me, I can infer that the music you listen to
reflects who you are.
I think we can all agree that most of Taylor Swift’s
music is happy and upbeat, and that’s fine, I may not like her music, but some
do. Why? Because the music reflects the listener, and also, the tone of the
music reflects the listener as well. As I said before, Drake is my favorite
artist, not only because of the lyrical value I hold on it, but because the
tone of his music reflects me.
“Promise
to break everybody off before I break down
Everyone
just wait now
So
much on my plate now
People
I believed in they don't even show they face now
What
they got to say now?
Nothin'
they can say now
Nothin'
really changed but still they look at me a way now
What
more can I say now?
What
more can I say now?
You
might feel like nothin' was the same”
Apart from the tremendous amount of lyrical value I attribute
with this song, the way he sings it
is astonishing. As we all should know, Drake is a rapper, not a singer, but he’s
special. The way he has separated himself from all the other mainstream rappers
out there is by his singing.
“When I made a choice to
start singing it was because of something that my father had told me which was,
'There's no rapper out there that sings and raps and does both things well...
and in order to be successful you're gonna need something other than just what
everyone else is doing.” – (Drake on “SoulCulture TV”)
Drake sings, which to me, is
like a contrast to his rap. Singing has that happy and cheerful tone, while rap
has that mainstream and hard beat. I’m like that. I’m a very happy person in
general who is always upbeat and energetic, I’m very rarely down. This part of
me reflects Drake’s singing. Then, I’m this real confident, tough and outgoing
person that you wouldn’t want to mess with. This is Drake’s rap, my other side,
because the tone of Drakes music reflects me, I can infer that the music we
listen to reflect who we are.
Music fills our lives every day, it may not be the one you like, but we should all know, that
someone else does. The music you like may not be liked by someone else, and
that’s because the music we listen to reflects us, whether it be the tone, or
lyrics. The music we listen to reflects us, which is why we like it.
